Nestled along the banks of the Maha Oya River in the heart of Sri Lanka, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the island’s most beloved wildlife sanctuaries. Established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, this unique facility provides care and protection to orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants found in the wild.
Today, Pinnawala is home to one of the largest herds of captive elephants in the world. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to see these majestic creatures up close in a natural and nurturing environment. Surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature, the orphanage serves as both a conservation center and a heartwarming experience for travelers of all ages.
Beyond caring for and breeding elephants, Pinnawala also plays an important educational role. It raises awareness about elephant conservation and responsible wildlife tourism in Sri Lanka.
